Established in 1997 as a research department within the "Network Control" division of Niroo Research Institute of Iran (NRI), the "Electronics, Control, and Instrumentation" department commenced its activities, employing a team of highly skilled specialists and technicians with advanced degrees from prestigious universities. The department focused on projects involving the design and development of electronic devices required by various segments of Iran's electric power industry. In this regard, the department has successfully designed and developed a diverse range of devices. Some of them are:
  • Power plant DC fault indicator,
  • VTR controller for power plant valves,
  • OVCT optical voltage and current transformer,
  • Medium pressure line fault indicator with remote data exchange capability,
  • Hydrogen purity meter based on MEMS technology,
  • Natural gas optical flowmeter,
  • Power consumption indicator,
  • Feeder management relay.
Also, four types of projects have been considered to be carried out in the research departments of NRI:
  • Policy research
  • Futurology
  • Foresight
  • Idea test (proof of idea) or POC (Proof of Concept)
With the separation of the control division, the department now operates independently as the "Electronics and Instrumentation Research Department". This change reflects the department's growing expertise and expanding scope of involvement in instrumentation projects. As a key subdivision of the Niroo Research Institute of Iran (NRI), the group continues to support various projects related to instrumentation equipment for the Iranian electric power industry.
The department also owns a laboratory named “quality measurement reference laboratory”, where it is possible to implement tests of single-phase and three-phase digital and electromechanical power meters, as well as other metering devices used in the electric power or other industries in accordance with international standards.
Some of tests that can be performed in this laboratory are: the meter accuracy and electrical tests, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), environmental conditions, and mechanical tests.
Research in the field of electronics and instrumentation equipment and devices used in the electric power industry, along with employing academic and industrial potentials in this field and aligning and directing them in order to promote the electric power industry.
Defining, managing and implementing projects, as well as research about electronics and instrumentation devices and equipment which used in electric power industry. It includes, but not limited to the following fields:
  • Electronic tools, equipment and devices
  • Photonics, and fiberoptics based sensors actuators
  • Sensors and actuators based on micro and nano devices
  • Instrumentation networks
  • Equipment renovation
  • Sensing and monitoring equipment and components of power plant systems and substations
  • Improving the existed equipment and devices
  • Cooperation and supporting other research departments in their relevant projects
